Eco-friendly dish washing with soap nuts (Reetha)
I got to do the dishes yesterday and realised how easy on the hands, dishes, rivers and water this lovely nut was – using soap nuts for over 3 years for our dishes and clothes and quite effortlessly. Sharing a bit on ‘soap nuts’ as natural cleansers in the kitchen. My 15 soap nuts last me at least 5-6 days (two washing cycles per day) for a family of five, in which there are 2 kids who use dishes extensively without restraint 😤. Prep time is 30 secs at max. Soak the nuts overnight. They will soften a bit by the morning. Heat them for a few boils and set aside to cool. Rub the nuts in your palm and release the soapalin in the water. remove the nuts and use the water to wash the dishes. Pour in more water, boil and keep for the next use. Or boil a little before you start doing the dishes. Most of the house helps take little or no time to get used to doing the dishes with them and more often than not, ask me for a bag of nuts for themselves🙂… which I share happily. Its the small things really, which can make one really happy!!
Chemical cleansers leech toxins into our water bodies – we are far away from a state where our waste water in the cities is getting treated before it joins the rivers and seas…
