Free gold and brown leaves

Its the season of gold. Bagfuls of free gold. We are hoarding for our community compost plant. Monsoon can be tricky when you do not get enough dry leaves. These leaves are sorted, shredded and stored in large drums for use in the wet months.
I store bags of them at home too, layering pots and kyaris to protect them from the harsh sun, slowing down the evaporation of the water, lowering the water consumption as well. Also, use them to layer the food waste in the composer. Main khush, khaad bhi khush, mera gold mere paas.
Collect your gold now.
The streets are uncannily quiet and the leaves lie where they should – undisturbed, unmoved and not getting in anyone’s way. It was us always getting in their way to go back to the soil. What are you doing with the dry leaves in your lane, wishing them away or adopting them?
